Q4: What’s your hiking style, newfangled GPS or old timey paper map and compass? Show us how you navigate the terrain where you hike. #ParkChat

A4: We suggest both! Have a map & compass with you and practice orienteering before you go. While electronics are convenient, do not rely on cell service or your GPS to know where you are. Most of AK does not have cell service & even GPS can fail in mountainous terrain. #ParkChat

replying to @LakeClarkNPS @LakeClarkNPS A4) I'm completely old school, give me an updated map & a compass and I'll be fine on the trails. #ParkChat

replying to @LakeClarkNPS @LakeClarkNPS A4) We use both, but mostly #GPS for serious hikes. Occasionally, it's also "Take a pic at the trail head or Visitor Center".....#parkchat

replying to @Stars252525 @Stars252525 @LakeClarkNPS A4.) Paper maps always - because GPS and phones aren't reliable especially with no signal in places like @Volcanoes_NPS #Parkchat

replying to @LakeClarkNPS @LakeClarkNPS A4 #parkchat GPS for the win. I don't buy maps anymore, just print digital files onto paper. It's great to have a backup, but dang, gps is such a step ahead of old skool map and compass. No debate at this point.

replying to @LakeClarkNPS @LakeClarkNPS A4. I can't remember a time when I couldn't read maps. Use them still, with a compass, if needed. Tech is fun, though. I learned to use GPS at work, learned how it made my mapping more accurate. I believe everyone should learn maps before GPS. #parkchat

replying to @LakeClarkNPS @LakeClarkNPS @Wild_Tribute A4: i'm glad i learned how to navigate with good old fashioned paper maps, but @AllTrails is a great smartphone app! currently attempting to learn navigation by the stars! we'll see how that goes. 😉
