Q7: How do you treat your drinking water in the backcountry? Alaska’s fresh waters are cold and clear but they’re not immune from various microscopic parasites, especially in areas where animals frequent.#ParkChat

A7: Assume parasites could be present in all H20. Boiling? Bring enough fuel 2 boil for up to 2 min. Filtering? Filters may not work well in freezing temps. To prevent clogging, avoid silty glacial H20 or let the silt settle in a bottle & then filter from the top.#ParkChat

A7 In the past, I have used Katadin pump filters. They are time-consuming, though. #parkchat

A7 On the aforementioned, and aptly named, Devil's Path, I drank from a spring without treating the water, because by that point, frankly, the possibility of water-borne illness was the least of my problems #parkchat

replying to @LakeClarkNPS @LakeClarkNPS A7) In Scouts we use to bring a tiny bottle with bleach in it & add a drop or two to the water that was gathered especially if it was from a slow or non moving source. Now I use @purinize drops. #ParkChat

replying to @LakeClarkNPS @LakeClarkNPS A7 On the trail I use a simple in-bottle filter. In camp I use a platypus gravity filter system #parkchat
