Little NPS Sites
ParkChat

Q2: When you hear the term "little" in reference to a @NatlParkService site, what is it that makes it little?
Do you base that term on physical size, number of visitors, number of staff, or how much the site has to offer?

replying to @tthrash @tthrash @59NationalParks Just an excuse to travel ;) #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks A1) As stated in my greeting I visited @HomesteadNM last year and was fascinated by all that it had to offer, it helps to put the Westward Expansion not only into perspective but also on a more personal level for each visitor. #ParkChat

A1: We’ve been to @HomesteadNM twice now. Loved it so much the first time (2104) we made a point to visit again last summer. It’s one of our favorite small parks! 😀 #ParkChat

replying to @unconpeace @unconpeace You will certainly read/see/hear some first hand accounts during a visit! #ParkChat

replying to @HomesteadNM @HomesteadNM @NatlParkService A2. I assume physical size, usually. That's where my brain goes. Little places can be big on scenery/history/facts/culture/etc. #ParkChat

replying to @HomesteadNM @HomesteadNM @NatlParkService A2: I typically think of number of visitors rather than physical size of park. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute @HomesteadNM Because you told me to. 🙄 #ParkChat

Do you base…

replying to @HomesteadNM @HomesteadNM @59NationalParks It really is! I kind of have a road trip sketched that will let me visit within the next few years. You guys, the Hoover and Truman sites, etc. :) #parkchat

A2. Great Q. Size certainly factors in but most importantly, how “well known” the park is to the general public #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @HomesteadNM @Wild_Tribute And he knows it. 😺 #ParkChat

replying to @HomesteadNM @HomesteadNM @NatlParkService When we talked about this in our pre #ParkChat planning I was think size. Having said that a small park can pack a big punch. Like #Homestead.

replying to @HomesteadNM @HomesteadNM @NatlParkService A2 I think of actual size, as well as size in comparison to its surroundings. A lot of the @nps_nyharbor park sites, like @TRBirthplaceNPS, fit the "little" category when you take into account the busyness surrounding them. But good things come in little packages. #parkchat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @HomesteadNM @NatlParkService There's pre- #parkchat planning?

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @HomesteadNM @NatlParkService Will add Lincoln’s Birthplace to that list. What else? #ParkChat

A2: A “little” @NatlParkService site typically indicates physical size to me. They often don’t lack in excitement, though. Some of our favorite sites are small ones! #ParkChat

replying to @HomesteadNM @HomesteadNM @NatlParkService #parkchat A2 both size and visitation can make a prank "little" but they have been some of our favorite stops! @ScottsBluffNPS for example. We like the fact that you get more personal time and attention from the Rangers! 😁

replying to @HomesteadNM @HomesteadNM @NatlParkService #ParkChat A2 Minute Man Missile comes to mind! The visitor center is so small, but so impactful

replying to @unconpeace @unconpeace @HomesteadNM @NatlParkService You have no idea. Minutes and minutes. #ParkChat

replying to @HomesteadNM @HomesteadNM @NatlParkService A2 I think about the size. Being from New York, some local NPS sites are a small home or church. A site which I can feel I fully cover in a couple of hours as small--but still worth seeing/preserving. #parkchat

Q3: We tell the story of the #HomesteadAct of 1862. It's a HUGE story for a "little" park as the Homestead Act gave away 270 million acres in 30 states over 123 yrs.
What is another "little" @NatlParkService site you've been to with a big story?
#ParkChat

replying to @Wild_Tribute @Wild_Tribute @HomesteadNM @NatlParkService @HarrySTrumanNPS in my (previous) backyard. #ParkChat

replying to @naturetechfam @naturetechfam @HomesteadNM @NatlParkService @ScottsBluffNPS #ParkChat they were reorganizing while we were there so the exhibit room was closed. But the view from the top!

replying to @sonlight00 @sonlight00 @HomesteadNM @NatlParkService Speaking of packing a punch. #ParkChat

Q3 We would be remiss if somebody didn't mention Golden Spike on the week of the 150th anniversary - connecting the continent by rail was huge for world history #ParkChat

replying to @HomesteadNM @HomesteadNM @NatlParkService #ParkChat A2 also @RiverRaisinNBPF

replying to @unconpeace @unconpeace Good shoutout! That's in 2 days! #GoldenSpike #ParkChat

replying to @HomesteadNM @HomesteadNM @NatlParkService A3) Sagamore Hill NHS is a packed house that tells so much history about the Roosevelt family and especially Teddy! #parkchat @SagamoreHillNHS

replying to @HomesteadNM @HomesteadNM @NatlParkService #parkchat A3 how about another favorite @AgateFossilBeds? Big on how long of a story their fossils cover over history! Or any of the Fossil parks, really, have big stories!

replying to @HomesteadNM @HomesteadNM @NatlParkService Pipe Spring National Monument in #Arizona is a small park that tells the big story of Mormon migration and settlement in the west. It was a good stop. #ParkChat

Q4: When many visitors arrive to #HomesteadNM they are surprised by how much there is to see and do here: exhibits, trails, genealogy, and traditional craft demonstrations.
What @NatlParkService site has surprised you the most with what they have?
