#parkchat Science camps are a great way to expose area youth to the outdoors and leave no trace ethics. Taking kids to the park is always a blast! #CampIyat # CitizenScience

Q5) Have you ever taken anyone to experience nature / backcountry / wilderness for the first time? How did it go? #parkchat

replying to @BeringLandNPS @BeringLandNPS Most people learn to love the outdoors through family or experience, but I actually read about it first! Thanks to Thoreau! #parkchat

replying to @BeringLandNPS @BeringLandNPS Good question. I’ll say it was a combination of the love of hiking and photography. I was a latecomer to wild places. Didn’t set foot in a wild place during my formative years. #ParkChat

TWO #Alaska NPS in the house, #ParkChat! This is a banner evening indeed. https://t.co/I1aj0SSgTU

replying to @BeringLandNPS @BeringLandNPS A4. Certainly my family, with vacations into the mountains, then more of my own curiosity when I heard others talking about the National Parks of the Rockies and elsewhere. #parkchat

replying to @BeringLandNPS @BeringLandNPS A4 My dad, who should have been a forest ranger but chose accountant instead. He introduced me to wild spaces. #parkchat

A5: Yes! They came from a big city. They were mesmerized. They have since moved to Alaska! #parkchat #WildPlaces

A4 My dad took me on my first ever camping trip when I was 9 - then my parents got me a subscription to @NatGeo when I was 10, I can also remember some educational cassette tapes for kids that talked about natural wonders of the USA #parkchat

replying to @mamanobles @mamanobles @mdeichlerauthor Hahaha! So true, Kathryn. Did that in a former segment of my life. I understand. #ParkChat

replying to @BeringLandNPS @BeringLandNPS A5) Numerous times when I was a Leader in the Boy Scouts and was there for the young Scouts' first campout. Many did well while a few decided that Scouting wasn't for them. #ParkChat

replying to @BeringLandNPS @BeringLandNPS A5: I had the honor to take my friend on his first backpacking trip last summer in @RockyNPS We attempted the CDT loop, had a great time despite needing to turn back the second day. #ParkChat

replying to @BeringLandNPS @BeringLandNPS A3 Not much for adventurous (aka dangerous) travel. I did kayak on Haro Straight in the San Juan Islands of Washington. That felt plenty adventurous to me. #ParkChat

replying to @BeringLandNPS @BeringLandNPS A4) continuing my theme of Madagascar - that was my first significant exposure to camping, hiking, National Parks and made me want to explore my own country and national parks. Thank you #PeaceCorpsMadagascar #ParkChat

replying to @BeringLandNPS @BeringLandNPS A4. I grew up on the farm, a place not so wild. I read about wild places and dreamed of visiting them. National Geographic specials on TV were also an influence. #parkchat

Q6) While we love wild places, they don’t always love us back. In three words, how would you describe your most unforgettable outdoor misadventure? #parkchat

replying to @BeringLandNPS @BeringLandNPS Q5 #parkchat Oh yes, many times! Usually goes well, but I put a lot of energy into ensuring that people have a good time. I love sharing some of my fav wild lands with friends.

replying to @unconpeace @unconpeace @NatGeo #parkchat Yes, nat geo was an influence for many. Especially when these wild places were not as accessible.

A5. We started taking our daughter hiking in a front pack when she was just a few months old. Even though she went through a "no hiking, thanks" period during her teens, now she's excited about being outside again. So I think that turned out well. #ParkChat

replying to @BeringLandNPS @BeringLandNPS When I used to guide hiking and backpacking trips in @GlacierNPS, sometimes I’d have to teach people (mostly women) how to pee in the woods. I think it was successful, although I don’t know if they peed in the woods ever again. #ParkChat

replying to @Mars744 @Mars744 @BeringLandNPS @DenaliNPS @AlaskaNPS When will you be there? See you at Wonder Lake in August? Already preparing mentally for the bugs #ParkChat

replying to @BeringLandNPS @BeringLandNPS A4 1st appreciation for hiking/camping was in the @boyscouts & exploring the woods/trails near my boyhood home on Long Island. Began exploring NPS, public lands from getting bored of city life in my 20s. Then inspired to get outside more by my brother’s AT thru-hike. #parkchat
