replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute @misskimmy13 Oh, I think I have a little extra on this topic. I was Washington State's L&C Bicentennial field coordinator for three years. I ate, slept, and breathed the Expedition. #ParkChat

replying to @WildWithinHer @WildWithinHer @e_terren @Wild_Tribute Glad you brought that up. We are extremely sensitive to using the word "discover" because in fact, there was an entire population of American Indians along the way.
#parkchat And they are STILL here.

Q4: Most people have a basic 4th grade knowledge of the #lewisandclark story. But how would our understanding of the expedition change if we looked at it as if we were standing on the shore watching the Corps of Discovery pass by on boats? #parkchat

replying to @LewisClarkTrail @LewisClarkTrail A3) I'm not quite sure how diverse was though it may have reflected America at that time. Whereas I that the de Anza Exposition included people from European, African & Native American ancestry. #ParkChat

replying to @LewisClarkTrail @LewisClarkTrail A3. Well, the obvious answer is that it included a woman, a Native American, a black man. But, it was also made up of men who were educated, and those who were not; with military experience, and with none. #parkchat

replying to @LewisClarkTrail @LewisClarkTrail That would require a much deeper dive wouldn’t it? You’d get a much better view of the people and the incredible effort they were making to keep the expedition going. #ParkChat

A4 As a AmericanLit teacher, it’s hard to get my students (HS juniors) to understand the significance to the folks of the day. much less those who saw it happen! It would boggle my mind as a tribesman. #parkchat

A4. I think that was the success of the Bicentennial commemoration--that the tribes told their stories. The Corps of Discovery II traveling exhibition was one amazing venue for that. And of course there's James Ronda's excellent "Lewis & Clark Among the Indians." #ParkChat

replying to @t_jh2009 @t_jh2009 Actually the Corps of Discovery was remarkably diverse! In addition to a woman (Sacagawea) and an African American (York) it also included immigrants (John Potts), men from privileged economic backgrounds (Lewis) as well as working class, and others. #ParkChat
