Q7 #ParkChat In the Caprock Canyons area, a conflict known as the Red River Wars occurred in the late 1800s between settlers and Native Americans. What contribution do you think bison had in this conflict? How do you believe bison have helped shape our nation and its history?

A7 The bison were food, clothing, dwellings, fuel, everything to the Native Americans. Every piece was used. When the hunters shot hundreds a day, just for hides, and left carcasses rotting and huge piles of bones, it was infuriating. Of course it led to conflict! #ParkChat

A7. In short, intentional destruction of the bison served Euro-American political aims of diminishing and sometimes eliminating Native America in the Great Plains. #ParkChat

replying to @Donald_Beard @Donald_Beard #ParkChat A7 wiping out a cornerstone species that means survival for a group of people is a sure way to attempt to control them. I know I would raise heck against someone doing that to my family. So bison were definitely influencial in causing conflict.

replying to @Donald_Beard @Donald_Beard A7) I'm not familiar with the Red River Wars but I'm pretty sure it didn't end well for the Bison & the Native Americans. I believe that William Cody hunted the Bison for the railroad workers during their expansion west. #ParkChat
