Bison and Texas State Parks
ParkChat

A2 I believe most people are in awe of bison and their wildness. They are so big and powerful and untamed, and I think the majority of people connect with that. I know I do. #ParkChat

A1 #parkchat Banff NP reintroduced bison to the park last year. I’m hoping to see them in July.

replying to @Donald_Beard @Donald_Beard @59NationalParks @Wild_Tribute @WindCaveNPS @CusterStatePark Absolutely! We see them almost every week all summer as we live 10 minutes away. 😊 #parkchat

replying to @Stars252525 @Stars252525 Can you see why @Stars252525 is in the #ParkChat Hall of Fame @Donald_Beard?

replying to @ParksandPoints @ParksandPoints @59NationalParks @Donald_Beard @Wild_Tribute Good one! My daughter is going to love this. She loves jokes and always tells one on our podcast.,#ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Donald_Beard @Wild_Tribute A1) I don't know their name but there's a Buffalo herd in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks
@59NationalParks @Donald_Beard @Wild_Tribute I've read that there's a herd in Utah's Henry Mts (near GSENM, Capitol Reef and Glen Canyon NRA). And aren't there some near the Grand Canyon?
A1 #parkchat

replying to @Donald_Beard @Donald_Beard A2 I love driving the Blackfeet Res in Montana and seeing their herd of bison. It just seems fitting for Blackfeet…and such a huge part of their cultural past. #parkchat

A2. Today, bison are revered as symbols of America's expansiveness and tremendous resources. But we came awfully close to extirpating them from the landscape. We learned, but at high cost to ourselves and to the bison. #ParkChat

replying to @Donald_Beard @Donald_Beard A2) A universal connection we found is the bison mix between being in a herd and having time to exist on their own, though eventually coming back to the herd. #ParkChat

replying to @Donald_Beard @Donald_Beard #parkchat A2 98% of visitors seem to be in awe of their size and stature, and respect them accordingly. Lots of people ask for more info and seek them out. We've been in looottttts of bison jams (esp @YellowstoneNPS), and we just smile and wait them out. 😉

replying to @EverybodysNPs @EverybodysNPs @59NationalParks @Donald_Beard @Wild_Tribute Excellent! #parkchat

A1 I've seen two herds of bison in my travels: one very small herd at Wiilderness Road State Park in Virginia, and the other at the Elk & Bison Prairie in the @LandBtwnLakes in @KentuckyTourism #ParkChat

Q3: #ParkChat The Texas State Bison Herd is considered the last vestige of the southern herd of southern plains bison. Do you think the overall makeup of the herd and their behavior has changed over the years due to increased human intervention?

RT @Donald_Beard: Q3: #ParkChat The Texas State Bison Herd is considered the last vestige of the southern herd of southern plains bison.…

replying to @WildWithinHer @WildWithinHer And as we read in our homework from @59NationalParks, the costs in places like Caprock was huge. But bringing them back to a healthy herd is so cool. #parkchat

A3 I know genetically the herd is quite pure. I like to think behaviorally that they’re no different than they have always been. Perhaps in managed herds they are more used to people than in, say, Yellowstone, but they are always wild animals. #ParkChat

replying to @Donald_Beard @Donald_Beard a2 - Symbolic still as a cultural icon from the American west from native Americans, to over-hunting, to rebound and conservation - all while still being controversial both inside and outside of the parks. #parkchat

replying to @Donald_Beard @Donald_Beard #parkchat A3 I'm guessing the blood lines have been merged with others in order to promote preservation, but their behavior has to be more human-tolerant since we have invaded so much of their space. Bet that didn't happen in the 1800s.

replying to @Donald_Beard @Donald_Beard @59NationalParks A2) My connection with Bison is one of fear while a herd walked beside me in both Theodore Roosevelt & Yellowstone National Parks as I was saying to myself "Don't hit the car, its a rental". #ParkChat

replying to @Donald_Beard @Donald_Beard A3 Have they lost there fear of people? I wonder about that every time I see a protected herd. #ParkChat

replying to @beckyjlomax @beckyjlomax @WildWithinHer A+ for tonight Becky. #ParkChat

replying to @Donald_Beard @Donald_Beard A3 Absolutely the makeup of the herd has changed. Aren’t they inoculated and managed rather than true free-ranging and wild? #parkchat

A3. I think anytime one creature crowds out another, behaviors change. I don't know the Texas herd, but the simple fact that humans manage wildlife implies change. Dan Flores' book "American Serengeti" gives the best overview I've read of the historic population. #ParkChat

replying to @Donald_Beard @Donald_Beard @59NationalParks A3) Most likely, like any other type of wildlife in a protected area they probably have less of a fear of humans. #ParkChat

replying to @Donald_Beard @Donald_Beard a2: to me, they symbolize originality - original animals on the land. #ParkChat

Q4 #ParkChat Caprock Canyons and the southern plains have been home to bison for thousands of years. The Texas State Bison Herd and lands managed by the TPWD are protected through conservation. In what ways has this native habitat changed?

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Donald_Beard A3: We had an attack just last week. A runner came around a corner and surprised a bison out of its usual grazing area. Luckily, despite extensive injuries from being gored, he will recover. Very rare occurrence. #ParkChat

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Donald_Beard @Wild_Tribute #Parkchat Q1: Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Wind Cave, Theodore Roosevelt, Badlands, Custer State Park, Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, Golden Gate Park and Land Between the Lakes have herds that I have seen.

replying to @59NationalParks @59NationalParks @Donald_Beard @Wild_Tribute A1: I’ve only seen herds @YellowstoneNPS and @GrandTetonNPS. I’ve seen bison at the National Zoo in Washington DC. @ParksandPoints doesn’t Buffalo, NYhave a statue of a bison or am I imagining that? #ParkChat
