I've been out for a run (Riverside where I do parkrun), washing and packing some things for holiday 🥳 and now relaxing.
Joining from North East England
replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie i missed parkrun yesterday cos i overslept. #pttravel
replying to @RTWBarefoot @RTWBarefoot Better today. Toe is doing well. No issues so I'm pleased. How have your runs been? #PTTravel
replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie I've been away recently so not done any runs for a while. Walked a heck of a lot though. #pttravel I would go for more runs but the weather up here is not proving useful (occasional torrential rain).
Q1 Which places have you visited that felt like you were off the beaten path and why?
replying to @RTWBarefoot @kate_frankie #pttravel a volcano on a small island in Vanuatu? (Gaua)
replying to @RTWBarefoot @RTWBarefoot Very much a chat for you! 😁 and hello 👋 #PTTravel
A1 #PTTravel Funnily enough, the Lake District! My cousin, a Park Ranger, told me that visitors rarely venture more than 400 yards from their car. So, once you've passed that distance, you can, if you avoid the more frequented routes, have the fells to yourself.
replying to @NomadKeith @NomadKeith I had that at the Grand Canyon, of all places! #pttravel
replying to @RTWBarefoot @RTWBarefoot #pttravel Well, yes! Haven't been there, but I heard it's not too difficult to get away from the crowds.
#pttravel aaaagh i got distracted by tvtropes. mmm adhd
RT @NomadKeith: A1 #PTTravel Funnily enough, the Lake District! My cousin, a Park Ranger, told me that visitors rarely venture more than 40…
RT @kate_frankie: #PTTravel Chat
A1 I thought Fiji was pretty off the beaten path when I booked. Full of 18-30s tourists!
Q2 How have you found local hidden gems when travelling?
replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie #pttravel everywhere is interesting. It's hard to put that into defineable objects as 'gems' is very relative, but it's a general truth.
replying to @RTWBarefoot
@kate_frankie #pttravel A2: but, in terms of my personal experiences:
b) local advice
c) completely by accident because I was passing and happened to be looking in the right direction at the time.
c) happens rather more often than you'd think. I blame ADHD.
replying to @RTWBarefoot @RTWBarefoot I particularly like the looking in the right direction part. I find that. Getting lost works! I really like taking local advice too #PTTravel
Q3 Share photos of places you've discovered when exploring outside of tourist attractions or places
replying to @kate_frankie
@kate_frankie Everywhere is touristy if there's a tourist in them, and some places are full of tourists, just not tourists like me.
This is Transnistria. #pttravel
replying to @RTWBarefoot @kate_frankie #pttravel People like me don't often to go Dubuque, Iowa.
replying to @RTWBarefoot @kate_frankie Not many people at all viist Deschambault, in Quebec, #pttravel
replying to @RTWBarefoot @kate_frankie Places Where People Live: somewhere near Nambour on Australia's Sunshine Coast, but far enough away from it to not be full of sightseeers. #pttravel
replying to @RTWBarefoot @kate_frankie We don't all *live* in tourist places. So this is from near where my real house is, in the UK's version of Ohio, just outside Mansfield. #pttravel
replying to @RTWBarefoot @RTWBarefoot The history of some places can be the thing that makes it feel off the beaten path. I don't know how to properly describe it but something like you go there for an entirely different reason to others? #PTTravel
replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie yeh. I mean that's why I go to places; a combination of history, culture, scenery, and sheer 'vibe', but the vibe is personal. #pttravel
Q4 Have you ever had a great experience when you've been lost or far from the crowds?
replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie #pttravel I imagine so. I'm weird in that I don't think of things in terms of 'great'. All experiences and places are created equal.
replying to @RTWBarefoot @RTWBarefoot I was really going for the opposite of bad experience, although I was intrigued to ask about any close shaves. #PTTravel
replying to @kate_frankie
@kate_frankie I have survived 100% of my travels #pttravel
Oddly, there's not been many experiences where I've been genuinely scared or worried or owt like that. #Privilege maybe?
Q5 Which places off the beaten path would you like to visit in future and why?
replying to @kate_frankie
@kate_frankie #pttravel Kiribati, because I've been to Polynesia and Melanesia so going to Micronesia is a given.
There's a couple of international borders I want to cross (eg Congo/Cameroon, Panama/Colombia), just because it's possible and I knew very few ppl who have.
A5 Some places in Eastern Europe. I used to have Russia on the list but that will now go on the backburner.
A few places in Africa, many of which have not been visited by people I know.
Romania, Slovakia and Lithuania are probably up top
replying to @kate_frankie @kate_frankie I've only set foot in 13 African countries. #pttravel
replying to @RTWBarefoot @RTWBarefoot I guess a lot is not traditionally visited by tourists #PTTravel
Q6 What advice do you have for travellers wanting to explore off the beaten path?
