Going Underground
TRLT
Q2: Some feats of engineering take us underground. Do you have a favourite? Show us a photo! via @LindaPeters64 #TRLT #traveltuesday
A2: Not all of it's open right now due to Covid etc, but @BigPitMuseum is a fascinating testimony to the Welsh coal mining industry #IndustrialHeritage @LindaPeters64 #TRLT
A2: Occasionally a travel experience leaves you in awe. One of those times was visiting the incredible Serepeum of Saqqara in Egypt It's more than 3000 years old and my guide and I were the only 2 people inside. Here he examines a granite sarcophagus of a Sacred Apis Bull. #TRLT
A2: I have had the chance to visit an electric power plant in the north of Italy, which was dug deep inside a mountain. It was incredible! I wasn't allowed to take photos inside though due to the risk of sparks, just at the entrance #TRLT
A2 #TRLT Entering the Louvre, we entered underground & saw remnants of the building when it was first built as a medieval fortress.

A2 These holes may not look like much, but they a part of a koriz, an underground water system built by Alexander the Great to bring water from the Nuratau Mountains to the Nurata Fortress 2,300 years ago. Epic ancient engineering. #TRLT

One of my favourites is the Othello Quintette Tunnels, near Hope B.C. Canada. Built through solid granite, they are valued for the metaphoric bedrock geology & railway history, as part of the Kettle Valley Railway.

A2: Nero's Golden House (Domus Aureau) had over 150 rooms & covered a huge expanse of Rome. It's an ongoing archaeological site, but is open for limited visits. It's spectacular, as were the recently reopened Houses of Livia & Augustus #TRLT https://t.co/yyL8wmIA69

replying to @HeidiSiefkas @HeidiSiefkas @LindaPeters64 A2) The Metro System in the Washington DC metropolitan area is quite impressive with the longest escalator in the Western Hemisphere at one of the stations. #TRLT

London Underground has a few disused stations that are used as sets for movies like Skyfall. They often have posters with puns on display #trlt A2

A2: i love a menacing escalator ride into any Soviet constructed metro system. the escalators are invariably steep, fast, and loud, and they were built deep to double as nuclear bomb shelters. (pictured is from Almaty, KZ 🇰🇿) #TRLT https://t.co/oVJLhqGEIc

@TheTravelCamel @LindaPeters64 A2. The life below train stations or the railway line running below GL, both re fascinating. I don't have a picture at the moment, but underground market below VT/CSMT station #Mumbai and its surrounding area, is like walking though the diagon/knockturn alley. Fascinating.

Basilica Cistern/Yerebatan Sarnici ❤️
Built 532AD - the largest surviving Byzantine cistern in İstanbul: 336 columns + many salvaged bits from older temples and palaces, a real treasure trove if you like your ancient architecture! #TRLT
