Q3 via @PureTraveller: Do you consider World Heritage Site status to be either a blessing or a curse? If so, why? #TTOT

A3: World Heritage Site status is a blessing AND a curse. Status can bring new awareness and potential visitors, which means more revenue to protect the place. However, visitors ALWAYS have a negative impact and need to be controlled. #TTOT

A3. If it helps to protect the place from getting torn down/ destroyed/ "improved" then it is a blessing - but then again, there's places which gladly lose their World Heritage Status just to get an ugly bridge. https://t.co/nyOhdBM8Pe

A3 As with everything. It depends. It can be a curse since UNESCO status can easily lead to over-tourism. On the other hand, it is a blessing when places are considered worthy enough of awarding them UNESCO status. #TTOT

A3. Personally, a world heritage status is both a blessing and a curse.

On one hand, you get the protection and conservation that some places may not get. However, the influx of tourists can be damaging.

Catch 22 situation at times.

A3 Destination’s view: more visitors adds to the economy. Protection of the site is implemented to prevent damage. There can be social conflict over how it’s going to be done. Subject to neglect even destruction then unlisted with @UNESCO #TTOT Image #LaLaguna @SonjaSwissLife

A3: It can be a “double-edged sword” (https://t.co/BfqryjdkmW), & while ‘overtourism’ is a problem (think that may be more due to cheap flights, local management, etc.), overall a ‘blessing’ (but on case by case basis + it can’t protect against conflict/climate-eco crisis). #TTOT

A3: Yes and No.

The status definitely brings attention to sites and helps to save them.

On the other side, the status can also bring mass tourism and most destinations can't handle those well. #TTOT https://t.co/GQiZEAY8Ea

A3 Yes there is always some negative impact with visitors - a risk for the area & ironically for the status of being the list of World Heritage sites - a cyclic reality. #TTOT https://t.co/ngKvK4kpX5

A3 Well said, Hendrik. The practical even greedy people are willing to get off the list & continue with their "de-preserving" activities. Money & politics. Not everyone in a place loves UNESCO sites as you know. I saw it in Lavaux (local war in the vineyards) #TTOT https://t.co/ztctHn7aOM

replying to @SonjaSwissLife @SonjaSwissLife A3. Yes, sadly there's always powers at play which do not want to protect something which is worth preserving, because all they value is €£$.

A3 Yes, not mentioning any names, of course, but enormous areas that were protected in the US had been put up for bid of industrial projects. 😥#TTOT https://t.co/2Uuban5bd4
