Q4 via @tangenghui: What roles can world heritage sites play in a mass tourism/consumerism world environment? #TTOT

A4: Unfortunately, World Heritage Sites are consistently at the center of overtourism debates. For good or bad, being on the list elevates the site compared to similar places, which means visitors will flock there just because it's on the list. #TTOT

A4. Great question! I fear: It drives Mass Tourism - Petra in Jordan is probably a "bad" example for that. It also makes the experience more like a tick mark on a list, that some people might go simply to be able to say "I was there".

A4 As soon as a place is on some kind of list, any list really. People visit, just because. When I watch people arriving, taking a selfie and leaving I know it is the tick-off-the- -bucket-list-gang. I always wonder what stories they are going to tell back home. #TTOT

A4 @UNESCO plays a role in education. A more concerted effort is needed to teach all global generations the value of respecting & protecting the place, people & culture using educative materials on site & off. Over-tourism can use capacity control. #TTOT #Sintra @SonjaSwissLife

A4: There are for sure sites, which don't get attention & which need more support. That's why I think it's good if the UNESCO adds new sites regularly.
But I think they should put more pressure on the destinations to come up with better strategies for its promotion. #TTOT https://t.co/umWFGdC8aP

A4. But then it also might bring some tourism to places where there wouldn't be any or very tourism before? Anyway, as long as it doesn't make it a "hot" destination (like the Horseshoe bend in the USA, which got famous via Insta) which gets overrun, I think it is good.

A4: How about making WHS status conditional on banning #singleuseplastic? Even if only at ‘natural’ sites, as it’s probably unenforceable in some ‘cultural’ locations, if @UNESCO really want to step up to the mark…

A4 The danger of tick marks. Such a pity. Perhaps Petra can implement some policies to control the purpose & length of time for a visit (like Bhutan requires a monetary upfront payment to even get into the country) Not that short-term visitors should be punished w/ price #TTOT https://t.co/JX4FrWqAv2

A4. World heritage sites can be the focal points to spread the word on conservation, culture, heritage and be a change leader in the world.

A5 I was late for #ttot 😢, but would love to see the Great Blue Hole, #Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System and a World Heritage Site of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization #Unesco

A4 Learning is the satisfaction of innate curiosity. Perhaps we should start there for education rather than imposing. Clearly fewer people these last years are looking at history at least in my country. It really makes me wonder what's taught in school these days. #TTOT https://t.co/OKSB2VoqeJ

A4 These are certainly excellent consequences and should be emphasised as economy is a necessary aspect of society. Receiving this #UNESCO listing also generates pride & perhaps accomplishment which will help to maintain those positive aspects of the destination & culture #TTOT https://t.co/JFSejei9nn

A4 That's what they said in art history. But it's good to hear from someone who has been there. Thanks. Gives us a better idea of planning visit to Angkor. #TTOT https://t.co/CcwJFhMiPw
