Q2 via @StevenOnTheMove: What amazing sight that you've visited isn't a World Heritage Site, but should be added to the list? #TTOT

That's most interesting. Does anyone know why? Limited information from the tourist office or just that the other temples are most appealing to some people? I've never been there (but it was on my art history university exam!) #TTOT https://t.co/IyiCNeJwWc

A3: Yes and No.

The status definitely brings attention to sites and helps to save them.

On the other side, the status can also bring mass tourism and most destinations can't handle those well. #TTOT https://t.co/GQiZEAY8Ea

A4: Unfortunately, World Heritage Sites are consistently at the center of overtourism debates. For good or bad, being on the list elevates the site compared to similar places, which means visitors will flock there just because it's on the list. #TTOT

replying to @aTravelCompanio @aTravelCompanio @PureTraveller Yes. Most tourists stay for 2-3 days and then visit the temples who are close together and close to the hotels. The whole areal is far bigger. I wanted to see more of the other temples and then haven't done it either, because of the time. #ttot

A4. Great question! I fear: It drives Mass Tourism - Petra in Jordan is probably a "bad" example for that. It also makes the experience more like a tick mark on a list, that some people might go simply to be able to say "I was there".

A4 As soon as a place is on some kind of list, any list really. People visit, just because. When I watch people arriving, taking a selfie and leaving I know it is the tick-off-the- -bucket-list-gang. I always wonder what stories they are going to tell back home. #TTOT

A4 @UNESCO plays a role in education. A more concerted effort is needed to teach all global generations the value of respecting & protecting the place, people & culture using educative materials on site & off. Over-tourism can use capacity control. #TTOT #Sintra @SonjaSwissLife

A3 Well said, Hendrik. The practical even greedy people are willing to get off the list & continue with their "de-preserving" activities. Money & politics. Not everyone in a place loves UNESCO sites as you know. I saw it in Lavaux (local war in the vineyards) #TTOT https://t.co/ztctHn7aOM

A4: There are for sure sites, which don't get attention & which need more support. That's why I think it's good if the UNESCO adds new sites regularly.

But I think they should put more pressure on the destinations to come up with better strategies for its promotion. #TTOT https://t.co/umWFGdC8aP

replying to @hendrikmorkel A4. But then it also might bring some tourism to places where there wouldn't be any or very tourism before? Anyway, as long as it doesn't make it a "hot" destination (like the Horseshoe bend in the USA, which got famous via Insta) which gets overrun, I think it is good.

A blessing.
Gives the site exposure and more people are able to visit the site.

Revenue is generated to maintain the site.

replying to @SonjaSwissLife @SonjaSwissLife @UNESCO That is what I dream of, people would travel to learn. I wonder why, if people travel to learn, do we still see so much hate, injustice, bullying, greed. Everybody should have learned from history by now. The information is out there. Too many refuse to listen. #TTOT
