Q8 What dining advice would you offer a European coming to North America for the first time? #TravelSkills

A8. Advice for Europeans coming to U.S.? Ship your clothes and pack your suitcase with this. #TravelSkills #travel

replying to @GermanyTourism @GermanyTourism A8 Be prepared for extra large portions. Save money by sharing plates with travel partners. #TravelSkills

replying to @GermanyTourism @GermanyTourism A8 In the U.S., portions are huge so no need to order an appetizer and a main. Just order a main. #TravelSkills

replying to @travelskills @travelskills A8. Much of the same advice offered here! Look for the lines. Tip 10-15%, try regional specialties, eat where the locals eat, stay away from fast food. #TravelSkills

cjmcginnis

replying to @GermanyTourism @GermanyTourism A8 You should know that Europeans have a reputation as bad tippers. Always leave a minimum of 15%. Leave 20% if service is good. #TravelSkills

replying to @GermanyTourism @GermanyTourism A8 To save money, go to fancy restaurants during “restaurant weeks.” Many places will require a reservation but you can fine dine for cheap. #TravelSkills

A8 Depends on where in North America! But same advice as we'd give any traveler: be open to new experiences, mix high-end with local staples, plan ahead (make reservations!) but embrace spontaneous discovery along the way. #TravelSkills

replying to @GermanyTourism @GermanyTourism A8 Don’t always trust review sites like Yelp since they can be gamed. Usually the busiest restaurants are busy for a reason. #TravelSkills

replying to @GermanyTourism @GermanyTourism A8 Don’t dawdle at restaurants. Once you’ve finished your meal, it’s time to move on so the waiter can “turn the table.” #TravelSkills

Visitors to N. America (the US more than Canada) need to expect HUGE portions. I suggest first-time visitors order 3 or 4 appetizers for two people and then see if they're still hungry. And be sure to go for some real southern BBQ; a quintessential USA meal. A8 #travelskills

A8: When traveling to #NYC, leave the big tourist areas! Visit the outer boroughs of the city for the best restaurants. Also, our servers get paid a much lower hourly rate; it is standard to tip 20%. #travelskills

replying to @cjmcginnis @cjmcginnis A8 Avoid the chains. There are so many great local restaurants in the US. #travel #travelskills

replying to @cjmcginnis @cjmcginnis A8: Long answer. Depends what city and what price point they choose to dine in/at. I would say that many will find restaurants and diners' voices MUCH LOUDER than they are used to and might prefer. Also, enormous portions #TravelSkills
