replying to @WWTravelChat @WWTravelChat A8. Yes, I think social media has been a major cause of over-tourism. @CasualTravelist picutres of Rome were unbelievable. #weekendwanderlust
replying to @byland_and_sea @byland_and_sea @WanderlustJ1 That's funny! We love a good Atlas, but they are harder to find now! Thankfully, the Barnes & Noble near our home always has the latest Rand McNally. :) #WeekendWanderlust
replying to @NomadsPassport @NomadsPassport Completely agree! It drives me crazy to see the insane amount of filters used. Makes me think I am looking at abstract art at that point. #WeekendWanderlust
replying to @aandj8804 @aandj8804 @WanderlustJ1 It's not that Paris is bad, there are just so many places that I enjoyed much more than Paris #WeekendWanderlust
A9: I hope that is what we do on here every week and for those of us that have blogs that people see what we are doing and are inspired to see the world with their own eyes. #WeekendWanderlust
A9: I hope so! The best way to combat overtourism is to visit the lesser known places and that's where social media can actually do some good! #WeekendWanderlust
replying to @wildheartedblog @wildheartedblog Yes! I know when I see a really cool place that my friend went to, I want to go! But then again, I feel like people in my culture don't travel as often as people in other countries… And then you have to wonder about business travel vs. leisure travel. #WeekendWanderlust
A9: Anything can inspire people to travel, so naturally social media can have that influence. #WeekendWanderlust
replying to @ABritSoutherner
@ABritSoutherner A8: Yes, in part. Read esp involving Instagram.
On the other end, read about these places that “secret”, then suddenly, cause plastered out there, they are no longer “secret”. #WeekendWanderlust
A9: Perhaps! I've heard plenty of stories of people going places just based SM - whether mainstream destination or not. I think it's nice when some lesser known spots get some of this benefit too though #weekendwanderlust
replying to @ABritSoutherner @ABritSoutherner A6: Enjoyment trumps everything. Sometimes that’s disconnecting, other times it’s sharing as we go! #WeekendWanderlust
replying to @Alamo @Alamo Thanks for sharing! Interesting that more people are using it during vacation than previously. To hear some current attitudes, I sort of expected the opposite from "civilians". #WeekendWanderlust
replying to @WWTravelChat @WWTravelChat A9. Yes, I feel that travelers are trying new places that we never heard of just a decade or two ago. Social media has helped with places like Albania, Armenia, and more African countries #weekendwanderlust
replying to @wildheartedblog @wildheartedblog A6: Yes to an extent. If I see a place only a few times on social media I am intrigued and will start researching and maybe planning a trip. If I see a place that everyone and their grandma are posting then not so much. Sensory overload. #WeekendWanderlust
A7.
I honestly cannot choose. I love every platform that allows me to share snapshots and videos 📸🌿
High quality pictures and footage I took with my DSLR are usually posted after the trip. So sharing stuff as I travel is a nice teaser of what is to come
#WeekendWanderlust
A7: It totally depends on the destination and the traveler. Solo travel, group getaways, & family vacations are all so unique. Different trips call for different social media platforms to capture just the right moments: https://t.co/JMQ9B4fjs1 #WeekendWanderlust #AlamoDriveHappy
replying to @wildheartedblog @wildheartedblog Absolutely! See my answer to #3. 😉 #WeekendWanderlust

A9- Social media is helping some, but a lot of people still go to the same tired places over and over #WeekendWanderlust #travelingsession

replying to @WanderlustJ1 @WanderlustJ1 @Travel_Session We hear that a lot, but we love Paris. Of course, we think a lot of that depends on why you go someplace. As art and architecture fans, the city is fantastic. Okay, and we like the patisseries. ;) #WeekendWanderlust
A8.
To a certain degree yes. These days more people travel which also contributes to overtourism. 😞
That’s why it’s so important to promote sustainable and ethical traveling and tourism 🌿
I love traveling, but it shouldn’t harm our planet!
#WeekendWanderlust
replying to @Travel_Session @Travel_Session @WanderlustJ1 I'd love to hear some recommendations. Not that I doubt you, just that I want to go to places more awesome than Paris. How else can I be a well-rounded traveler? 😉#WeekendWanderlust
A10: Don’t worry, You have to experience every thing and have those moments and living in the moment is taking charge of those feelings and just seize the day. #WeekendWanderlust
A10: Since I have to use social media on a trip, I've started getting my shots throughout the day and waiting til the end of the day to upload them. This allows me to quickly get what I need and still enjoy the moment instead of editing/writing captions. #WeekendWanderlust
replying to @StevenOnTheMove @StevenOnTheMove Interesting. I tend to get lazy because of the many platforms I try to use so will post the same pic on Insta and twitter to save time. Not always but most of the time. #WeekendWanderlust
A8: I think there have been some clear cases of overtourism because of Instagram, but I think it's one of several factors. I definitely notice though when places become "hot" bc I'm seeing the same posts everywhere! #WeekendWanderlust
A10: I try to balance social media with enjoying the moment, but only posting to IG stories instead of putting something out on EVERY platform. I get to share what I am doing, but then quickly return to the moment so I can savor it. #WeekendWanderlust
A10: Not that hard. Take a few pics then put down your phone. If you must post, do it at the hotel or something. Join the JOMO movement so you can enjoy the travel moment! You've paid a lot for it, put time and effort into it and can never get it back! #weekendwanderlust
A8: Connecting with people is a great way to explore. People are taking the #scenicroute more and more which we always encourage and helps spread out the tourist in cities everywhere. Going off the grid is a great place to start: https://t.co/Pwh6RLBlEG #WeekendWanderlust

Definitely! Some places have gotten really popular due to SM pictures! And people keep discovering new locations.
I think it’s both amazing and bad. It’s cool that ppl are seeing and learning more about differnt places, but it’s so important to -1-
#WeekendWanderlust
replying to @TravelLatte @TravelLatte @Travel_Session Yeah I can see that. I love history and food, but to me I feel the people are just a little more snooty. I might be completely wrong lol. #WeekendWanderlust
replying to @byland_and_sea @byland_and_sea I do think it's particularly true for some specific locations, but maybe not as a whole. I think we, as an industry, can play a role in spreading those people out, though, by showing other places that should be visited. #WeekendWanderlust
replying to @WanderlustJ1 @WanderlustJ1 I haven't always, but more recently have started to view the platforms as very different ways to share/engage with people. So I try to be more selective about what I post and where I post it. #WeekendWanderlust
replying to @aandj8804 @aandj8804 @Travel_Session Very valid point! Can't be well rounded if we avoid certain places. #WeekendWanderlust
A9: I think it definitely is! I went to Mexico City & I got so many comments from followers & friends about how my posts made them want to check it out, so that felt good. #WeekendWanderlust

Thanks for joining the #WeekendWanderlust chat!
Make sure to come back next week - same place, same time, new topic!
replying to @wildheartedblog @wildheartedblog A10: That's tough to do sometimes, but I try to focus on just taking pictures with my DSLR or video recordings. I prefer to relish in the moment, then tell everyone about it later. #WeekendWanderlust
A9: Absolutely! Learning about new places to travel is one of the best parts of social media. You can learn so much about a new place. We recommend flying into popular cities, and then venturing out for day trips to extend the adventure! #WeekendWanderlust https://t.co/E6tIZIdNum
A10: Not having wifi or a SIM card can be freeing sometimes. it forces me to just use my phone for photos, maps & notes! #WeekendWanderlust
